Gold Coast:

  • Pindara Private Hospital
  • Pacific Private Hospital
  • Broadwater Day Surgery Hospital

Sunshine Coast:

Your procedure will be scheduled at the facility most appropriate for the surgery being performed and your clinical needs. Our patient care team will confirm the relevant hospital and provide all admission information as part of your pre-operative preparation.

Your Journey, Step by Step

First Enquiry — A Welcoming Beginning

When you first reach out to the clinic, our dedicated patient care team will respond with warmth and professionalism. We will support you in:

  • Selecting the appropriate appointment type — cosmetic, functional, or reconstructive
  • Understanding what documentation to bring, including your GP referral letter and any relevant imaging or prior reports
  • Planning around work, travel, and personal commitments

Our goal is to ensure your first visit is well-prepared and feels entirely effortless.

Initial Consultation — Clarity, Understanding, Options

Your first consultation with Dr Sparks is about listening, understanding, and exploring the possibilities available to you. He will take the time to:

  • Understand your motivations, goals, and expectations fully
  • Review your medical history and any previous procedures
  • Conduct a thorough, personalised assessment of your anatomy and relevant function
  • Discuss suitable treatment pathways and what they realistically involve

This appointment also includes clear, unhurried discussion of:

  • Typical recovery timelines and what to expect at each stage
  • A detailed, honest account of risks and how they are managed
  • Transparent explanation of fees, inclusions, and any anticipated out-of-pocket costs

No decisions are required at this stage. This is your opportunity to become fully informed, to ask every question you have, and to leave feeling clear and confident.

Second Consultation — Reflection & Commitment

Elective cosmetic surgery is a significant decision, and Dr Sparks is committed to ensuring that every patient has adequate time and information to reflect before proceeding. You will be offered a second consultation to:

  • Confirm the proposed surgical plan and address any remaining questions
  • Revisit any new considerations that have arisen since your first appointment
  • Ensure you have had sufficient time to absorb all of the information provided

In accordance with Medical Board of Australia requirements, a minimum seven-day cooling-off period must elapse after your two consultations and signed informed consent before surgery can be scheduled or a deposit accepted. This interval exists to ensure your decision is considered, unhurried, and fully informed.

Pre-Operative Preparation — Bespoke Planning

Once you have decided to proceed, our team co-ordinates every detail with precision and care. This includes:

  • Tailored pre-operative instructions and any medication advice specific to your procedure
  • Co-ordination of hospital admission and specialist anaesthetic planning
  • Pre-operative photography and, where appropriate, imaging
  • A personalised recovery and support plan, including dressings, scar care, and scheduled follow-up appointments

Our goal is for you to arrive at surgery feeling well-prepared, informed, and confident.

Surgery Day — Supported, Secure, Informed

On the day of your procedure, your comfort and safety are the absolute priority. From admission through to discharge, you will be:

  • Supported by an experienced clinical team at an accredited hospital facility
  • Reviewed by Dr Sparks, who will confirm your plan and priorities with you directly before proceeding
  • Afforded complete privacy, unhurried support, and clarity at every stage

Depending on the procedure and clinical considerations, surgery may be performed as:

  • Day surgery — for the majority of procedures
  • Overnight stay — when clinically appropriate, most commonly for deep plane face and neck lift surgery, where overnight monitoring and comfort are recommended as standard

All surgery is performed in accredited hospital facilities in collaboration with specialist anaesthetists, in accordance with Australian safety standards.

Recovery & Follow-Up — Attentive, Personalised Support

Post-operative care is structured, attentive, and ongoing. You will receive:

  • Early review appointments for wound assessment and dressing care
  • Detailed guidance on scar care, swelling management, and activity restrictions
  • Monitoring of contour changes and functional improvements as healing progresses
  • Long-term follow-up to support stable, mature healing over the months that follow

Dr Sparks and the clinic team remain accessible throughout your recovery to answer questions and provide reassurance at every stage.

Returning to Everyday Life — Practical, Personalised Guidance

We provide tailored advice to support your return to work, social life, and physical activity, including:

  • A staged, individualised reintroduction to exercise and physical activity
  • Sun protection protocols and guidance on scar maturation
  • Practical advice on timing around travel, events, and professional commitments
  • Return-to-work guidance aligned with the demands of your role

Every recovery timeline is individual. Our recommendations are always tailored to your procedure, your lifestyle, and your personal wellbeing.

Costs & Financial Planning — Transparency with Care

Clear, comprehensive financial information is provided from the outset. This includes:

  • Dr Sparks’ professional fees and inclusions
  • Hospital and specialist anaesthesia fees
  • Anticipated costs for post-operative garments, dressings, and prescriptions
  • Medicare rebate eligibility and private health insurance guidance, where applicable
  • Guidance on planning time off work and structuring your recovery period

Financial clarity allows you to plan with confidence and without uncertainty.

Whether you are considering surgery for the first time or seeking a specialist assessment, we invite you to begin this journey with thoughtful preparation, clear information, and the support of a team that honours your individual experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr Sparks consults at The Coastal Clinic on the Gold Coast and Fraser-Kirk Plastic Surgery on the Sunshine Coast. Our patient care team can help you identify the most convenient location and first available appointment.

Will my consultation with Dr Sparks attract a fee?

Yes. Consultations with Dr Sparks are specialist medical consultations and attract a fee reflecting the time, clinical experience, and personalised care provided. Each consultation is conducted in an unhurried manner, allowing for thorough assessment and a detailed, individualised discussion.

Consultation Type Fee Medicare Rebate
Skin cancer & reconstructive $200 $86.30 with valid GP referral
Cosmetic $300 No Medicare rebate
Do I need a GP referral to see Dr Sparks?

Yes. A referral from your GP is required to book an appointment with Dr Sparks. A referral allows access to Medicare rebates where applicable, facilitates appropriate communication between your GP and Dr Sparks throughout your care, and ensures your management sits within accepted medical standards. If you are uncertain whether your referral is appropriate, our patient care team will be pleased to assist before your appointment is confirmed.

Are there Medicare rebates for surgery?

This depends on the medical indication for the procedure. Skin cancer, reconstructive, and functional procedures generally attract Medicare rebates, and private health insurance may contribute depending on your level of cover. Cosmetic procedures are not eligible for Medicare rebates or private health insurance benefits. In limited circumstances where a procedure is undertaken for both functional and cosmetic reasons, partial rebates may apply. All financial considerations are discussed transparently during your consultation.

What surgical risks will be discussed?

As part of the informed consent process, Dr Sparks discusses the specific risks and possible complications relevant to your proposed procedure, the potential benefits and limitations of surgery, alternative treatment options including non-surgical approaches where appropriate, and the expected recovery process and follow-up requirements. This discussion is personalised, unhurried, and designed to support fully informed decision-making.

Does Dr Sparks personally perform his surgery?

Yes. Dr Sparks personally performs all key components of every procedure he undertakes. He may be assisted by a qualified surgical assistant for elements such as retraction and dressing application. Dr Sparks remains responsible for the surgical plan, the execution of the procedure, and all post-operative care throughout.

How long will I need to stay in hospital?

The length of stay depends on the procedure performed and individual clinical factors. For a deep plane face and neck lift, an overnight stay is routinely recommended to allow for close monitoring and optimal comfort. Most other procedures are suitable for day surgery. Dr Sparks will advise you on the anticipated length of stay for your specific procedure during consultation.

What type of anaesthesia is used?

Anaesthetic choice is guided by the procedure being performed and patient-specific considerations. Facial aesthetic and reconstructive procedures are most commonly performed under general anaesthesia. Skin cancer procedures may be undertaken under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference. All surgery is performed in accredited hospital facilities in collaboration with specialist anaesthetists.

Can surgery be combined with other treatments?

In selected cases, complementary treatments may be discussed as part of a comprehensive management plan. For patients undergoing facial aesthetic surgery, this may include anti-wrinkle injections, microneedling, or laser treatments where appropriate. These are considered individually and are not routine — their suitability, timing, and limitations will be discussed during your consultation.

I live on the Sunshine Coast — can I still see Dr Sparks?

Yes. Dr Sparks consults regularly at Fraser-Kirk Plastic Surgery on the Sunshine Coast, providing the same standard of specialist care for patients north of Brisbane. Surgery is performed at accredited hospital facilities, and the patient care team at Fraser-Kirk will co-ordinate your journey from enquiry through to post-operative follow-up.

What should I bring to my first consultation?

Please bring your GP referral letter, Medicare card, any relevant prior imaging or investigation reports, a list of your current medications, and any photographs or documentation from previous procedures if applicable. If you have specific questions prepared in advance, we always welcome these — your consultation is your opportunity to have every concern addressed.
