Specialist Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon
Dr David Sparks is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon on the Gold Coast, with a special interest in deep plane face and neck lift surgery as well as facial plastic surgery more broadly.
As the only dual-trained Plastic and Craniofacial surgeon on the Gold Coast, Dr Sparks brings significant depth of anatomical knowledge to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. His training extends beyond Australian shores, with sub-specialty fellowship training in craniofacial and facial palsy surgery at Vancouver General Hospital, Canada, and dedicated observerships with deep plane facelift and rhinoplasty surgeons in Vancouver (Canada), Beverly Hills in California (USA) and Harley Street in London (UK).
This breadth of international training, combined with over a decade of surgical experience, underpins an approach to facial aesthetic surgery that is precise, structurally informed, and uncompromisingly focused on anatomically grounded outcomes. Deep plane facelift surgery — the most anatomically sophisticated approach to address features of facial and neck ageing — demands exactly the kind of three-dimensional facial understanding that craniofacial training uniquely provides.
Dr Sparks holds a PhD in Regenerative Medicine and has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed international publications, bringing a research-driven rigour to every aspect of his surgical practice. He is a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University, and is frequently invited to speak at major surgical meetings and in the media.
He consults at The Coastal Clinic, Southport, and Fraser-Kirk Plastic Surgery on the Sunshine Coast
Dr David Sparks is a Plastic surgeon and the only surgeon on the Gold Coast holding post-fellowship training in Craniofacial surgery. His practice spans the full breadth of facial plastic surgery — from complex reconstruction and head and neck oncology through to facial aesthetic surgery — with a particular focus on deep plane face and neck lift surgery. This combination of reconstructive depth and aesthetic focus reflects a surgical formation dedicated to holistic facial plastic surgery management.
Following his Australian specialist training, Dr Sparks undertook a competitive 6 month Craniofacial fellowship in Vancouver, Canada, within the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department at Vancouver General Hospital, under Drs Kevin Bush, Nancy Van Laeken, Asim Bashir, Kevin Nickel and Tara Teshima. This fellowship provided high-volume operative experience across minimally invasive and open facial fracture management, complex functional rhinoplasty, facial palsy and reanimation surgery, and head/neck cancer resection and reconstruction. Additional subspecialty exposure was gained with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service under Dr Mark Reichman (orthognathic surgery) and with the Head and Neck Surgery service under Dr Eitan Prisman and Dr Scott Durham, encompassing both soft tissue and bony oncological resection and microvascular reconstruction, and with the Oculoplastic Surgery service under Professor Peter Dolman.
Dr Sparks has further refined his aesthetic practice through international observerships with several facelift surgeons. With Dr Rick Warren in Vancouver (Canada), he developed a structured, anatomically rigorous approach to deep plane entry and cervical retaining ligament release as well as a refined approach to lower eyelid surgery. With Dr Ben Talei in Beverly Hills (USA), he gained a deeper understanding in the preservation deep plane approach, mastoid crevasse technique, and deep neck reduction. With Mr George Orfaniotis in London (UK), he refined his commitment to the extended deep plane approach with maximal ligamentous release alongside techniques to support and optimise the jawline and neck contour. The synthesis of these influences defines his current operative approach to facelift surgery. It is this breadth — spanning complex trauma, oncological reconstruction, and facial aesthetic surgery — that makes Dr Sparks uniquely positioned to serve patients on the Gold Coast, bringing the anatomical knowledge and operative judgment of the most demanding surgical environments to every patient he treats.
Dr Sparks maintains an active academic and research profile that directly informs the standard of care he delivers to patients.
He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in international journals including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Science Advances and Nature Protocols, with his research spanning regenerative medicine, reconstructive microsurgery, oncologic surgery, and bone tissue engineering. He holds a PhD in Regenerative Medicine from Queensland University of Technology, for which he was nominated for the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award. During his training he received multiple national research prizes, including the Emmett Prize from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Neville Davis Prize from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the Poate Family Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Travel Grant. He serves as an active peer reviewer for the ANZ Journal of Surgery.
Dr Sparks holds an academic appointment as Senior Lecturer at Griffith University. He is actively involved in the education and supervision of RACS plastic surgery trainees, and has a longstanding history of anatomy education for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as RACS surgical trainees.
He is regularly invited to comment in national media on topics in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including appearances and contributions to programs and publications including Channel 7 and The Guardian Australia amongst others.
A considered approach to facial aesthetic surgery — grounded in anatomy, not skin alone. Each plan is built around the individual, their features, and the way they age.
Dr Sparks has spent time internationally with facelift surgeons in Vancouver, Beverly Hills and London’s Harley Street. At the core of his practice is the Extended Deep Plane Face and Neck Lift — a technique that elevates the deeper structures of the face rather than placing tension on the skin. Where indicated, adjunctive procedures such as targeted fat grafting and endoscopic brow lifting are integrated into a plan tailored to your anatomy and concerns.
Dr Sparks offers a comprehensive approach to both aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty, grounded in precise anatomical analysis and long-term structural stability. Each procedure is individualised, balancing form and function with careful respect for existing facial features.
Dr Sparks is a Specialist Plastic Surgeon whose practice is focused exclusively on surgery of the face, nose, jaws and neck. His approach is anatomy-driven and bespoke — addressing the structural foundations of facial form rather than relying on surface-level correction. Each procedure is carefully selected and tailored to the individual.
Choosing a plastic surgeon is a considered decision. It asks for trust in the practitioner, clarity about the process, and honesty about what surgery can and cannot offer. Dr Sparks approaches every consultation with the time, attention and transparency that decision deserves.
All surgery and invasive procedures carry risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Read our full information on the risks of surgery. Dr David Sparks — Specialist Plastic Surgeon, MED0001863770.
